Cave Creek Schools Still Spending 2000 Bond Money
Preface by Greg Smith, LearnYes.org
Headlines don't tell whole story
As a former newspaper guy who once sat at a copy desk from 3 until midnight Wednesday through Sunday editing stories and writing headlines, I can tell you it's an unappreciated art.
Reporters don't normally write headlines. A copy editor reads the story then summarizes it in a few words, following a ton of arbitrary rules. In a big hurry. So heads, as we say, can miss the mark.
The head on the following posting shows what happens when there's no room for nuance.
"CC district sitting on millions" is correct. But I fear some people rushing through the paper before work will only see the head or the first paragraphs.
Some will get the wrong idea. They'll say don't pass a K3 override if the district is sitting on millions. They'll be wrong. The millions are from a bond election, and Arizona law prevents spending bond money on teacher salaries. Our confusing state funding formulas require separate K3 elections to adequately fund teaching staff.
With today's staggering budget crisis the last thing we need is to lose the K3 override. We're losing too many teachers already.
I hope everyone who reads this will try to explain to their friends and neighbors that the district desperately needs the K-3 override. Don't let them get thrown off track by a solitary headline.
